The invocation was offered by Russell C. Atwood, pastor, First Baptist Church, Tenaha, as follows:

Heavenly Father, we call upon you this morning in the name of Jesus Christ. We call upon you because you are our creator and in your image are we made. It is you that has established us and in you we exist and trust.

For too long, Father, we have turned to our own ways and have walked in our own wisdom and have found them to be inadequate. We have become bankrupt at every point of our society: morally, spiritually, and economically. We are truly a nation in great need of healing. But still we are your people, the object of your divine love. For this reason, I lift up these men and women whom you have placed in these chambers and who have been appointed to bring healing and pray that they would call upon you now. Father, you have promised, "Call to

me and I will answer you and I will tell you great and mighty things which you do not know." (Jeremiah 33:3) And again you have promised, "If my people who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray, seek my face and turn from their own ways, then I will hear them from heaven, will forgive their sin, and will heal their land." (2 Chronicles 7:14)

If ever there was a time in our nation when we have needed to turn to you, it is now, Father. Therefore, I lift these precious ones up to you and ask that you would grant them the wisdom and the courage to bow themselves before you, to seek you, and to lift up their hands to you for guidance, for you will answer them. True healing is but a short step away, for you are always near and all healing comes from you alone. Let your healing begin with them today Lord, and let it touch our entire nation. To the glory of your name and for the sake of your name alone do I ask this in Christ. Amen.
