As you know, today is Memorial Day, and many of us have folks in our districts that have been touched directly. We've lost folks in military service. And I appreciate you letting me take the time today to recognize an airman from Round Rock.
On July 21, 2008, a B-52 named "RAIDR 21" took off from Guam and encountered engine problems and crashed into the Pacific. That B-52 was on its way to the Philippines to celebrate Liberation Day to mark when the Philippines were liberated from the Japanese. On board was the pilot, Major Christopher Cooper, 33 years old, who was a graduate of The University of Texas from Round Rock. Also on board were Major Brent Williams, 37 years old; Captain Michael Dodson, who was 31; First Lieutenant Joshua Shepherd, who was just 26 years old; First Lieutenant Robert Gerren; and also George Martin, who was a graduate of the Ohio State University, my alma mater.
Whether you serve in peace or in war, military service can be very rewarding, but it's also very dangerous. And on this Memorial Day, I hope that we can all remember the folks from our communities from across Texas and across the United States who gave their lives in military service, and also the many Gold Star families that are out there. Thank you for your attention, members.
